Moose in the Mist in Acrylic

The Subject
I took the reference photo for this piece in Acadia, Maine during the National Wildlife Judging Competition with my 4-H wildlife judging team. We didn’t see any (real) moose on our trip, but our team did place first in the nation. I love the way the muted warms and cools of the scene contrast each other to create subtle interest.
The Process
I began by freehandedly sketching the drawing, using my own reference photo as a guide. Then I began adding the major color masses, starting with the the misty background. Once I had the lines and values in place, I added the finer details such as the lichen.
